Understanding the Eight Limbs of Yoga
When most people hear the word "yoga," they think of physical postures (Asanas). But according to Patanjali’s Yoga Sutras, Asana is only one of the Eight Limbs of Yoga.
Here is a brief overview of the eight-fold path:
- Yamas (Ethical Disciplines): Non-violence, truthfulness, non-stealing, energy management, and non-attachment.
- Niyamas (Personal Observances): Cleanliness, contentment, discipline, self-study, and surrender to a higher power.
- Asana (Physical Postures): The physical practice designed to keep the body healthy and prepare it for meditation.
- Pranayama (Breath Control): Expansion of the vital energy through breath regulation.
- Pratyahara (Sense Withdrawal): Drawing the senses inward, away from external distractions.
- Dharana (Concentration): Focused attention on a single point or object.
- Dhyana (Meditation): A continuous, uninterrupted flow of concentration.
- Samadhi (Bliss/Enlightenment): Total absorption and union with the object of meditation.
By exploring these limbs, we transform yoga from a workout into a lifelong journey of self-discovery.
